About MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre

If a stadium-scale tour is coming through Tampa Bay in the summer, this is almost certainly where it lands. The amphitheatre sits on the Florida State Fairgrounds right off Interstate 4, and it holds roughly 20,000 people — about 9,900 in reserved seats under and around the roof, and another 10,000 on the lawn behind them. That makes it the largest outdoor concert-only facility in the region by a wide margin.

It opened in July 2004 as the Ford Amphitheatre, with a bill headlined by MercyMe. Since then the name has changed about as often as the headliners: 1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre from 2010, Live Nation Amphitheatre in 2013, and MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre after that. Which name a person uses tends to give away roughly how long they've lived here.

The bookings are the big summer touring packages — the amphitheatre circuit that runs Mötley Crüe, Jack Johnson, John Mellencamp, TOTO, Avenged Sevenfold, Rob Zombie and the Pussycat Dolls through the same lawn in a single season.
