About Yuengling Center

It opened on November 29, 1980 as the USF Sun Dome, and the first event ever staged inside it was an Alice Cooper concert. That is a fairly good indication of what the building has always been: a college arena that spends a lot of its calendar being a rock venue.

The original roof was inflatable Teflon. It isn't anymore — over $43 million in work since 2000 replaced it with a permanent structure, and a $35.6 million renovation approved in 2011 reconfigured the entire seating bowl. The room now holds about 10,500, including a student section of more than 3,500.

Since July 2018 it has carried the Yuengling name under a ten-year agreement. It remains home to USF men's and women's basketball and volleyball, and it slots neatly into the market between the theatres and the 20,000-seat rooms — big enough for a real arena show, small enough that the back row still feels like it's at the concert.
